Welcome to Al-Mahdi Shia Society

Al Mahdi Incorporated of Dunedin is a registered charitable organization dedicated to enriching the lives of the growing Shia Muslim community in Dunedin and the wider Otago region. After significant effort, Al Mahdi achieved charitable status in 2025 and proudly established a dedicated community center. The Shia Muslim presence in Dunedin dates back to the 1990s, and recent waves of immigration and resettlement have significantly increased the community’s size. Today, over 200 Shia Muslims call Dunedin and its surrounding areas home, with the Al Mahdi Centre serving as a vital hub and second home for all.
